The aim of this study is to look at the correlation between different features of the umbilical cord and foal health outcomes. In particular, we would like to know about the length of the cord, number of twists and type of twisting.
Participation in this study involves 4 brief surveys for data collection. The first survey involves questions about the mare. The second survey includes details about the foaling, as well as measuring the length of the umbilical cord and taking a photo. Please ensure you are able to fulfill these requirements, as this is the bulk of our information gathering. The final two surveys will be follow-ups to see if the foal has had any health issues at 7 days and 30 days after birth.
Participation is entirely voluntary and your horses' data can be withdrawn at any time by contacting the researchers. This website is designed to help with data entry and participation, however its use is not mandatory. If you do not wish to use the website, please fill out the Printable Form and follow the instructions on the sheet.
